What stuff to use!?!?

Question

If I get a guinea pig it want to make his/her cage myself. And I want to know what stuff to use. I think i was going to make it out of wood,so what wood would be best to use? Thanks!

I wouldn't use wood because it could get very smelly, very fast.  The best things are storage cubes and coroplast (corrugated plastic).  These cages are huge, easy to make and easy to clean.  They're also very inexpensive.I've been using them for 8 years and have even built similar version for my cockatiel and my rabbits.

these are just some site with ideas on guinea pig cages, i didnt read it but some look like plastic storage containers cut and modified to make a nice home.

wood would be fine i suggest not getting a guinea pig though..highly reccomend not getting one.lol

Wood absorbs urine and any chemical you put on it to seal the wood could be harmful if ingested.

I would use coroplast.

guinea pigs (or any rodent for that matter) like to chew on wood, so i would put them in a wire cage with a solid bottom. that way you can be sure they won't chew their way out or anything. these are pretty reasonably priced.

but if you insist on making one yourself, you could use those cheap wire sections that people use for shelves for the sides, some zip ties to join them together, and a shallow tupperware bin for the bottom. I can't really explain it very well, but check out home depot or something and see what they have. maybe tell one of the employees what you're trying to do and they can make some suggestions for materials.
