I want to be a high school teacher and these are the subjects I have narrowed it down to: English, History (US or World), and Spanish. Which will have better job prospects in California in 5 years or so? Which would you prefer and why?

  1. Spanish is dispensable huh? Well what about all the people that speak English? I'd say you should teach World History.  The great thing about is it that it's always changing, so lessons aren't exactly the same as years pass. Talking about current events in the world is also extremely fun to do. :)

    Hope this helps!

  2. History and Spanish. Try Special Education. It's not as bad as people think.

CA and TX have ~the most Spanish speakers in the USA, so if you know espanol it's a huge plus for you.

There is a surplus of English teachers.

  3. English, because even Spanish kids have to take it. Also, all kids must understand English before they can read and comprehend History.

  4. I would pick English.  Whenever I get older, I either want to be an elementary school teacher or a high school English teacher.  Good luck with your teaching career!!

  5. Well first off, hopefully in five years you will be able to get a job in California! (Budget Crisis and all)

Most people that go into secondary education major in English or History so there are a lot of teachers for those subjects.  If you have any interest in Math or Science you could almost guarantee yourself a job.

As for Spanish, you could always be an ELL teacher, they also always need those.  Good luck with your studies.

  6. Actually, all subjects will have good job prospects due to many teachers from the Baby Boomer generation retiring. Pick a subject you love and will not tire of as you will be teaching the same things for years to come.

  7. Probably English. Spanish teachers are dispensable because of the large amount of people fluent in the language in CA. History will get repetitive over the years.

English is your best bet, and my favorite subject!
