  1. The first thing you will need to do is check out what the laws of your state are. They will explain at what age you MUST be schooling your child and what they need to be taught. You can find the laws on www.hslda.org.

    Another place to look to see what they should be learning is the department of education website for your state. You should be able to find the grade level expectations on that site. It will explain what the public schools are required to teach the children in each grade. I like to use it as a guide.

  2. They mostly learn how to interact with each other and the teacher. How are you going to home school that?

  3. Home schooling at this age is great.  There are guides all over the internet to help you but basically when they start 1st grade they should know colors, shapes, numbers to 10, alphabet letter identification and be able to write their first name.  They should know what their last name is and what their mother's last name is.  They should know their phone number and address.

  4. What do you remember from kindergarten?  What really sticks out in your mind??  Teach it!  The only thing we can not teach is common sence.  That is something you get within your home---life, etc..  Start with the basics. ABC's 1,2,3s.  Remember always add a second language when it comes to the basics.  Good Luck and Take Care.  Let me know how things go @ buckou@sbcglobal.net.

  5. Hi, I am a homeschooling mom and you teach them all subjects. Science, Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, and P.E. I have a 4 year old and a 6 year old, so that is the age you are looking for.

    What you teach them also depends on your state guidelines. Get a list and see what it has on there. Those are the things that they must know to pass or be on par with the other kindergartners in their state. That should give you a good idea of where to start.

    You also might want to join a homeschooling group in your area or on-line, sometimes they can be helpful for tips and techniques.

    If you are worried about social interaction then have play-dates or swap a subject with another homeschooling mom or invite a friend over for lessons sometimes.

    Anyway homeschooling is alot of fun (sometimes frustrating ;-) and I hope that you enjoy it.

  6. For that age we employ very very little structure and really just try to foster a love of learning and get a sense of the child's learning style-- just reinforcing letters, numbers, learning to read, doing a lot of reading together and taking advantage of library reading programs for that age, going on a lot of field trips, doing lots of hands-on things like building and making music... cooking together, gardening together, playing board games and cards (helps reinforce a lot, actually). Playing with educational software. Lots of art and crafty things. Going on nature hikes, camping, photography & scrapbooking.

  7. It depends on your state. In NY, you must teach:

    Grades K-12: patriotism and citizenship, substance abuse, traffic safety, fire safety; Grades 1-6:arithmetic, reading, spelling, writing, English, geography, U.S. history, science, health, music, visual arts, and physical education;

    Here's a complete look at NY's laws:

    It would probably really help you to find a local support group and attend a convention.  This link may help:

    Also, to answer another responder's question, you can teach social interaction by becoming involved in support groups or other activities.  Here's some info on socialization:
