What substance has a high tensile strength but extremely poor heat conduction?

I have 2 plates with high pressure on each side and a vacuum between them. one is high temp one is low temp what is the best substance to keep them apart?

  1. What is the expected temperature?

    You might be looking at carbon fibre or ceramics depending on the various factors:

    Highest hot.

    Lowest cold.

    Temperature difference.

    Gap distance.

    Material each plate is made of.


  2. Keep them apart? In that case, do you mean compressive strength? If so, ceramics work well, but not in tension. Even glass would work.

    As far as tension i'm stumped. Usually tension would be used along side of "keep things together". So that's why i bothered an answer.

    Then yes, ceramics are your best bet. Maybe a piece of tile?

  3. Cheese. Preferably Jarlsberg, but cheddar will do in a pinch.
