  1. Water is transported throughout the plant through the xylem. Nutrients such as sucrose is transported through the phloem. Water is absorbed through the roots and transported to the leaf. Sucrose is more or less manufactured inside the plant and transported where needed.

  2. Water is transported from the roots to the leaf. This is the job of xylem( water-conducting unit of the plant). In return, food such a sugar is transported from leaves to the different part of the plant,  this is done by phloem.

  3. Hi Brenda,

The substances that are being transported from the roots to the leaf is water, along with the nutrients from the soil that the plant requires to manufacture its food (which is done in the leaf with carbon dioxide that it gets from the air).

For most plants, the nutrients are the chemical elements of magnesium (Mg), nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K).

This is why we use fertilizer in soil where there are not enough of the necessary nutrients for the plants that we are trying to grow.

I hope this is of some help to you.

    Hiking Tony
