  1. Natural gravel is good. I would avoid colored gravel but I have seen tanks that use black gravel which looks great. You can use sand but it does have some drawbacks. Coarse sand is better than fine.

    Have a look at a few aquarium websites, there are always lots of photo's of peoples tanks which might give you some ideas.


  2. I like natural looking gravel the best

    If you do go for sand I suggest pool filter sand. It is heavier and a more constant size. It sinks fast if disturbed so it shouldn't mess with your filter as long as the intake isn't to close to it.

  3. Totally agree with natural gravel.

    Avoid sand at all costs. I love the look of it, but it causes too many problems with filtration, water ph, etc.

    I have white gravel in my 4ft planted tank and it looks fantastic!

  4. I suggest natural gravel.

    Coloured gravel doesnt look nice to me. Since you'll have live plants, go for a natural looking tank :)
