Hi guys - in September am starting teacher training and will need a car to go to my placement schools.

I would like a little car, second hand, I can't afford more than between 500-700 although I don't want to spend loads on repairs because its falling apart. It should be small so I can park it, and doesn't need to have a fast engine and I would like good miles to the gallon. Importantly I would like a low insurance bracket (I'm an almost 22 y/o girl). Is this possible?! Please help. x

  1. bicycle.

you need to spend more like $4,000 to find a good reliable car.

$500 will get you good set of tires

  2. Try ringing round the Franchise dealers and ask them if they have any cheap cars they are sending to the auction. Some may help you, you may have to agree to sign a receipt that states words to the effect " Sold for scrap" That in effect covers the dealers against any future claim of an unroadworthy vehicle. Another way might be if you have a friend or relation in the motor trade who can do the asking for you. Either way, you are quite likely to get a bargain.

  3. you need to go for something like a Ford Fiesta, Nissan Micra or a renault clio. also get a 1.2 or 1.4 version. tax is cheaper on these than a 1.6 version

cheap to run and cheap parts, should it need repair.

  4. pug 106 xsi

  5. I had £500 to spend on a car 2 years ago and ended up buying myself a 1993/K reg Peugeot 106 1.1 XN for £425. It was red, with no dings or rust and had done 100,000 miles and gave me 45 + MPG. I owned it for 9 Months (needed a bigger car) and all I paid out on it was a new Clutch (£125). I sold it on in excellent condition with 145,000 miles on the clock and got £575 for it.

I guess I was lucky and if it were practical enough i'd have another one.

Other good cars in this price bracket is the 1.2 Renault Clio. So cheap to run. Nissan Micra 1.0 (early - mid 90's) is a great car but if it goes wrong it is very very pricey. I suggest anything small and European at these prices as they are plentiful (french cars especially).

    Good Luck.

  6. you are supposed to collect as much as resource as you can by searching the relevant keyword in search engine,if you have good luck there, then your problem solved.however,if you could not find the fitful answer by doing that, here is the resource i prefered.http://car-insurance.online-helpers.info...

  7. Look for a Peugeot 205, preferably a diesel.

They are virtually indestructible, have no rust traps, and are very long lived.

Mine is a 1990 model (18 yrs old!) it's done 80,000 miles and the diesel engine is usually reckoned to last to at least 200,000 miles before needing a major re-build.

It has a 1769cc diesel engine and is easily capable of 90+mph, and even driving fast in it, it still returns 50 to 55 miles per gallon. The seats are very comfortable and even driving 200 miles in it on one day, you get out and don't feel stiff.

  8. I'll give you the same answer I give everyone else who asks this type of question, which is this...For that sort of price, condition is everything, make and model count for nothing when a car gets to that sort of price range. Any inherant reliability or superiority a car once had will be worn away by the time it's a £500 runner. You might well think a VW or a Japanese car would be better, and they might, but bear in mind parts prices can be steep for these cars compared to good old Fords and Vauxhalls. Examine its bodywork, check the engine sounds good and doesn't smoke, listen for any untoward noises from the suspension/gearbox/exhaust etc, and have a look at the overall condition of the interior of the car, as it'll give you an idea of how well it's been cared for, as will an appraisal of the seller. I usually find rough, dodgy people sell rough, dodgy cars!

Stay away from dealer cars at that price too, you'll be buying a tarted-up £200 banger. Try the Auto Trader cheapies section, your local papers and even places like shop windows and supermarkets.
