  1. Depending on how hard the tornado is going to hit, this is what you would need:

    * Plenty of water bottles

    * Food that does not require any heating

    * Flashlight

    * A battery operated radio to see if it is safe to go upstairs

    * Cell Phone

    * Mini walkie talkie for every family member in the house so you can stay in contact with them at all times.

    * First aid kit

    * Blanket and pillow

    These are things you will need to have in the basement for the tornado.

  2. Ready.gov suggests these items...

    Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

    Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation

    Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food

    Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both

    Flashlight and extra batteries

    First aid kit

    Whistle to signal for help

    Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place

    Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

    Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

    Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)

    Local maps

    Additional Items to Consider Adding to an Emergency Supply Kit:

    Prescription medications and glasses

    Infant formula and diapers

    Pet food and extra water for your pet

    Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container

    Cash or traveler's checks and change

    Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov

    Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.

    Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.

    Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

    Fire Extinguisher

    Matches in a waterproof container

    Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items

    Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels

    Paper and pencil

    Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

  3. All you need is a weather radio.

    How do you know a tornado is coming today?  Thats not how tornadoes work.  They generally impact a very small, unpredictable area.  A house on a street may get hit, while the houses next door dont have any damage at all.  They can tell an area has a chance for a tornado in advance, but they certainly cant tell you for sure, and they really cant pinpoint it down real specifically.  Go on, live your life, dont live in fear of slight maybe's.  If the tornado sirens go off, then calmly head down to your basement.  The odds are, it will miss you.  If you get unlucky, it still wont last very long, so no real supplies are needed, just the weather radio to make sure it has passed you.  Then be careful coming out, downed electric lines are the biggest hazard.

  4. water, radio (operated by batteries), a cellphone, some canned food, something to sleep on, perhaps a blanket and towel..

  5. Tornados don't work like they did on Desparate Housewives.  They are relatively quick-hitting, and you certainly don't have time to run to the store, buy supplies, get home, tape up the windows, board up the doors, etc., etc., etc.

    A flashlight, and some form of access to news.  If you're in a metro area, a television works as well as a NOAA weather radio.  Of course, when the power goes out...

  6. Battery operated radio  , cell phone , water  ,and a pillow , blanket to cover your head..
