What surfboards do what jobs?

Question

I am thinking about getting a surfboard since i go to the beach often in the summer, and just had one question. What surfboards do what things. What i mean is that short boards are for speed and doing tricks, but what are all the other boards for? Longboards? Fish Boards? I would like to know every kind of board.

Shortboards: These can be used for the more intermidiate and experienced surfer but if you are a beginner you can learn on it but it will be difficult. They are also good for riding green waves (waves which are unbroken)

Longboards: A very bouyant board which can catch any sized wave from 1ft. They are very big and heavy though.

Fish Board: This is the sort of board I would like to get this summer. I am wanting to get better at surfing so I think the fish is the right board for me. It comes from very short to around 6.5ft long. It is also quite wide so it can catch smaller waves. It is also good if you are looking to move on from the small waves and go out the back and ride the bigger ones.
