What swimming exercises help me with canoeing?

i canoe quite frequently. i am wondering, what strokes should i swim that may help me with canoeing (ie delts, lats, chest, back)? and does swimming help me with my stamina?

  1. Think about which muscles are worked canoeing.

    Freestyle/crawl should be good.  The lower arm does something like a bench pull, the upper arm is like a straight arm front delt/lat pull down, and you alternate.

    Sit and do a canoe paddle motion, and think how you would accomplish propulsion swimming with similar motions.
