What symbol is used to indicate "approximately"?

  Sometimes the bottom line is straight like the regular equal sign and the top is just a tilda ~.  

  A lot of people use = with a . on top.

  I have seen an = sign with three lines as opposed to the two as well, though I don't see this often.

~   .....it's an equal sign that looks like 2 of those on top of each other.
