I'm hosting a dinner with a science theme for 60 people. There will be 8 round tables with black tablecloths. I'm struggling to create beautiful centrepieces which correlate to the theme. Please help!

  1. Dry ice with the beaker theme would be cool literally. Paper runners with math equations and symbols. Or the periodic table of elements as a theme.

  2. Get large clear vases with mirrored chargers underneath, put thin branches with some wild flowers (sun flowers would be elegant with the black tablecloths).  You could attach small beakers to branches and add food coloring to them for contrast.  Surround with different size glass prisms.  These are very inexpensive, but elegant.  Then add small voltives in between the prisms.  I think that would look spectacular!!!

  3. Use Beakers and Test Tubes.

  4. Get some large branches, place them in vases, and hang loads of test-tubes in them (put wire around the top, and make a wire-handle). Fill test-tubes ½ with water and place flowers in them.

Don't have a traditional seating plan - name each table after a planet, and tell people they're seated "at the table of largest planet" (easy one - that's Jupiter). Make it harder according to the guests' knowledge.

Alterantively name the table after famous scientists.

  5. I would go to a kids Educational toy store and look at their models--you may be able to get some inexpensive models of either an atom or a double helix. You could set these on some sort of pedestal and surround the base with beakers filled with flowers or candles.

  6. Your key words here are Formal & Science.  The black table clothes are a great start...now go with white napkins, keeping the formal look.  For the science part, you can use a Sandpendel (a deskteop Foucalult Pendulum) as your centerpeices.  This will create for an intresting interaction and  conversation piece.  Thus keeping your formal dinner and science theme professional, yet entertaining.

  7. Test tube rack with water in each test tube and add a few drops of different food colouring into each. Then add a single white flower into each and see if the petals change colour.

Dry ice would be so effective as a center piece or even on arrival.

For place mats you can make round mats like the planets

For favors you could give sweets like mars, milkyway, galaxy, starburst, flying saucers and space dust.

You could set out the room as the solar system with tables in accordance to order.
