What table foods are ok for 9 month old to eat?

My daughter will be 9 months in a week and she eats very little tablefood. She loves the Gerber Puffs and Wagon-wheels but won't really try much of anything else. She does like frozen peas and pancakses. Are pancakes even ok to give her if you make the ones without adding eggs? Her pediatrician told me that she should be on table foods by now and eating what we eat. I know you aren't supposed to be giving babies eggs, honey, nuts, etc but are there some foods in general that shouldn't be given yet?

I keep reading where parents give baby whatever they are eating for dinner (without seasoning of course) but am I to actually give her spaghetti if that's what we're eating?

Lol, can you tell I'm a first time mom? :P

  1. I do not really worry about how much food my kids eat until 12-13 months old. Starting around 9 months I begin offering them whatever we eat.  I just blend, cut up,pureed whatever they can handle they caneat.  Formula or Breastmilk is supposed to be their main source of food/calories until 12 months. Food prior to a year food is for experimenting or learning and yes if you eat spaghetti cut it up real small and let her eat it.  Making a mess is part of the learning process as is playing with the food and should not be discouraged.

Good luck and a clear mat under the high chair is a good idea!

  2. Eggs are a great food for her to be eatting at this stage, unlike honey and nuts, well cooked eggs are ok to feed your baby at six months and at a year she can eat runny eggs, they have formed a large part of my babys diet and are a life saver when you dont have much time.  You can give her scrambled eggs on their own or with cheese and / or beans, omlette with any number of ingredients, mushrooms, tomato, cheese, ham, peppers, chicken etc and boiled egg mashed with butter, my little boy loves all of these.  He also got a lot of pasta dishes at this stage, I just used the small pasta shapes you get to use in soup and added whatever sauce we were having for dinner (cheese sauce with tomatos was a big favorite).  He also loved homemade soup.  Sandwiches or toast is great to give them because they can eat them themselves as well as cooked veg, fruit, pieces of cheese and pieces of cooked pasta for snacks.  You really can feed her what you are eatting, you might just have to change an ingredient for hers and make sure it is well chopped up, I loved this stage when they are learning how to eat properly and tasteing all different things, good luck!

  3. as long as she/he is eating it and not having problems with it go for it! make sure you watch carefully for allergies, or choking, still wouldnt offer peanut products at this age however, but at that age my kids ate any potato product, all pastas, casseroles,  meat loaf is easy cause it breaks easily, and anything thats tender and can mash easily, roast, cut into slivers, just about anything give to them!

  4. try steamed veggies, fruit, yogurt, cheese, lean meat, pasta, toast, hummus.  My oldest son loved avocado at that age.  My youngest is 6 months and he fed himself toast with hummus this morning.  She is old enough.  As far as pasta,  if I make spaghetti for dinner  just make a large pasta that is easier to grab for baby.

  5. She can eat anything she can chew up and swallow, except for honey.

Eggs are fine, unless she has allergies.  (The old rules about avoiding allergins until 12 months have recently been disproven.  Unless baby has allergies, or there is a strong family history of allergy, baby can have eggs, dairy, wheat, citrus, fish, etc. from 6 months.)

Yes, she can eat spagetti, and you can season it as you usually would. (Another myth says that babies can't have seasonings.  Which is  a myth that tends to result in picky children who are afraid to eat anything but chicken nuggets.)

Cook meals for the family.  Cut up small as needed, and offer to baby.

The only foods you need to avoid are choking hazards like raw veggies, nuts, popcorn, whole grapes, etc.

  6. Yes, exactly, if you have spaghetti offer spaghetti. At this age you can get off without "special" baby meals. Just feed what you're eating.

  7. Any foods that she can chew and swallow w/ out choking are fine. My daughter is 11 months and does not eat as much table food as i would like but she refuses baby food. I let her daycare feed her whatever they are serving that day. They cut it up really smal. She loves green beans, cooked diced carrots and sweet peas. Also loves mashed potatoes and mac-n-cheese. We dont feed her much meat yet but that will come when she gets more teeth. (she only has two) At wal-mart in the can goods section they have a 4 pack of store brand vegetables that come in small plastic containers. They do not even have to be heated. I just drain the water off and dump it on the high chair. She will eat the whole thing. They love to feed themselves and this also helps them learn different textures. When i make spageti i cook a larger type pasta for her this way she can pick it up easier . Scrambled eggs are great to feed her especially if you are in a hurry. I also make a big batch of pancakes on the weekends using baby cereal and baby fruit as extra ingredients. We freeze these and she can eat them anytime. i like this because i know she is also getting something healthy.
