What tag do I use on a car I just bought???

Question

I'm buying a car from a private owner today or maybe tomorrow. Not from a dealer. I know if I buy from a dealer they give me a 30 day tag to drive home with. Since i'm buying it from a private person..what license plate do I use to drive home with? They won't give me their plate will they?

Also...what if I buy the car when the license plate agency is closed? and the insurance office is closed? I work until after 5pm..and they are both closed by then.

Arrange it so that they will drive it to your house just before the sale.  So the car can sit in your driveway for few days while you get the DMV process done.

The close the deal at your house (give money, sign title,etc.)  The you return the favor by driving him home.

check with ur ins. the usualy will cover a new car for 2 weeks to a mounth u also have a certian # of days b4 u have to get all of that

Are the plate tags expired?  If they are good you generally have 10 days to 2 weeks to inform the DMV of the ownership change.  If the tags are expired you can buy a 3 day pass from the DMV. But while you're there you can get the tags renewed and the vehicle registered in your name while you're there.  

You can also make a quick trip home and to the DMV anyway.  Drive carefully (i.e. follow all traffic laws) so that the police wont notice you.  As a back up have friend follow you so the a cop car cant be directly behind you and spy your plate.  The police are quite understanding if you explain your situation politely they will let you go with a warning.
