What techniques do the mass media use to sell conventional ideas about gender to women and men?

Hopefully, the media isn't "selling" anything...

But I have to agree with you...but honestly, we can't help it. Gender roles are bred into everyone from birth..."Jimmy can't play with dolls," etc. Journalists are just writing how people normally look at things. The only ones who don't are g*y publications, and even then they use a different set of roles that they stick to.

I'm in the media, and I'm getting kind of sick of it myself. I work from home and watch my son during the day, and it just makes me realize how much people (through the media) think a dad should not be as much of a parent as the mom. I'm sick of "parent" magazines that just cater to what moms go through, things like that.

I think also that TV shows (which are not news media...it's just televised entertainment), put jokes and stories together about things that most people are used to...which makes it difficult for those that are filling the opposite roles...
