  1. The Geneva Accords established during the 1954 Geneva conference was to temporarily divide Vietnam at the 17th parallel into the Democratic Public of Vietnam (a.k.a. North Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam (a.k.a. South Vietnam) until a national election to be held in July 1956 that would determine which form of government would control all of Vietnam.  The temporary divide lasted a little over 20 years and lead to the Second Indochinese War, which we know as the Vietnam War.
