I am a VERY basic beginner. I have only played twice (with a 5th grader, just hitting it back and forth for fun) but I want to take lessons be on the tennis team this fall. I tend to hit the ball too hard and it goes out all the time..

  1. it would be good if you could demo some racquets prior to buying. i can only suggest heavier frame (11 oz - 12 oz) if you tend to overshoot. that way you can learn controlling your power. good luck with your lessons and hop you can make it on the team. hope this helps :)

  2. go to a good tennis store and demo some racquets. racquets w/ smaller head sizes produce less power but you're supposed to hit with spin. larger head sizes(about 100 sq. in. and above) are for beginners. you need to start with an oversize racquet and focus on generating topspin. do not buy a racquet that a pro uses cuz itll be really frustrating. if you're hitting out alot, you must be hitting flat shots without alotta topspin. tennis IS NOT a sport where you can rip the racquet thru the ball and have it go in the court. you need a clean stroke to become a good player. (yea i wish too that there was a racquet that would allow me to go 100% on the ball)

www.tenniswarehouse.com is a good tennis supplier. they give demos too..

  3. Head:p

  4. The tennis racquet for you depends on the type of swing you use to strike the ball.  Generally speaking, the stiffer the racquet the less control.  As you stated you struggle to keep the ball in the court, you could use a racquet that provides more control than power.

Without seeing you swing a racquet, it is impossible to tell which one is for you.

The best answer is to go to a tennis store and take advantage of their "demo" program.  They will let you take and try various racquets to determine which one is for you.  Whatever small fee they may charge for "demoing" different racquets is always taken out of the price of any racquet you ultimately decide to buy.

And of course their is no substitute for seeking the opinion of your local pro, like me, who can give you the best advice on a racquet after seeing you swing one.

  5. if your a beginner you should buy at least a 30$-40$ racquet or just buy a 20$ one and you can change it to the way you like. it doesn't matter what brand you get just something to start out with.

  6. when i first started i just got a wilson, it wasnt expensive. but after i've played alot i got a head racquet, they work really well.

and for hitting the ball too hard, that's not the racquets falt, you just have to work on hitting the ball better.

  7. I would recomened a Wilson as the don't have as much power as a Babolat or a head.

I would get tight strings as tight strings are for control and loose strings are for power.

Cheers Hope I helped Cheers Brad
