Hey all

I used to play soccer/football, where if i had spare time, i would just go out and juggle/ practice my shooting/ practice my dribbling/ ball control, etc. Heaps of stuff to practice.

However, In tennis, what can i do in my spare time? I know hitting th eball against the wall is good, but what else?

Lastly, ppl say to practice hitting tennis ball against the wall, what does this improve?

Thanks all

  1. swim or raquettball

  2. conditioning/strengthening of the legs by biking, gym, running etc and cardio workouts to build up your stamina.. there's also a number of footwork drills that you can do.. split steps.. up and down sprints i don't know.. jumping jacks lol these were all just little drills i remember my tennis coach was teaching me when i was young.. running laps around 6 tennis courts then 5.. then 4 etc lol i just realize now that my coach was very harsh for a little kid..

practicing against a wall improves your timing and shot preparation.. if you keep hitting tennis balls you will get very consistent when you step on court. i just chalk the height of the net on the wall everytime i practice so i know if i'm lifting my shots enough.. personally i don't have any specific drills lined up.. i just usually go up to a wall and hit groundstrokes first.. ie) 50 forehands.. 50 bh.. up close then i start to move back.... alternate volleys up close fh/bh/fh (really helps keep the feet moving) sometimes serve.. until i cant go anymore.. if you take advantage of practicing against the wall.. it can simulate real play and you have the best opponent too =) plus you can really watch how you prepare for a shot and perfect your technique

perfecting the footwork is just as important if not more because if it is not there and getting prepared to hit a shot is such a task (for me it is anyway) lol.. you can't always hit the shots that you like.. plus getting tired is a big problem when you're a serious tennis player.. so a lot of those kinds of conditioning is key to improving in tennis

also... i like to spend 10-15 mins just hitting serves on court.. it's good practice.. but usually practicing alone gets very boring sometimes.. but in the end you'll have the edge

    hope i helped a little.

  3. Walling practice improves your timing hitting forehands & backhands.

Play a lot of matches with different opponents. Join a tennis club so you can play enough of it.
