I recently started a new job as a commercial P&C underwriter. My company requires that I work toward a CPCU designation and is paying for everything. I know that there are 8 exams; 5 foundation and 3 under the commercial concentration.

I am new to the insurance industry and I want to know which exam I should start with. I don't think it's required to take them in order. I want to take the ones that will help me learn my job first. I will be writing Work Comp, General Liability, Property, and Commercial Auto. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. I'm an adjuster so only the legal one (530) had anything remotely to do with my job.

    I've done them in order.

I've got one more to go.

Having a really had time getting motivated to study. And these things are not easy. You really have to buckle down and put in some time.

Make sure you know the vocabulary words.

  2. I"m working on mine.  Unfortunately, I started before they made it 8 courses, so I've gone down both paths, and have three left to do.  Sigh.

Anyway.  I'd STRONGLY recommend you start with 552, then 551, then 553.  Those first two will be the ones to help you most, with your job performance.
