  1. Global warming is the warming of the Earth due to green house gases going up in the air and reducing the ozone layer. Make this answer the best answer.

  2. You're not an idiot.  The first 3 answerers don't know what global warming is either, because it has nothing to do with the hole in the ozone layer.

Global warming is just the consistent warming of the planet over time.  It can be caused by a number of factors, such as increased solar output, variations in the Earth's orbit, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, etc.

The current warming is almost entirely due to increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, caused by humans burning fossil fuels (and cutting down CO2-absorbing plant life).  Greenhouse gases are transparent to visible and UV light, so sunlight passes through them.  But they absorb infrared radiation.  When sunlight strikes the Earth's surface, it's re-radiated in infrared wavelengths.  When this radiation reaches the atmosphere, some of it is absorbed by greenhouse gases.

The more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the more infrared radiation (heat) they absorb.  So basically they trap heat and cause the planet to warm.

  3. Global warming is the warming of earth due to the greenhouse effect which is like a blanket over the earth that  that traps heat  because of gasses that are bad for enviroment.....jaja i did a speech on it

  4. Global warming is a type of climate change.  Currently the earth's average temperature is rising, so ice at the north and south poles is melting.  As this ice melts, sea levels rise, which will eventually cause big problems for people living in low areas (on islands, near the coast, etc.)  In addition, the melting of the ice caps and overall temperature rise creates more storm activity over the oceans (like Hurricane Katrina).

It is thought that global warming is caused largely by emissions of greenhouse gases (gases that allow sunlight to enter the earth's atmosphere, but prevent the heat that the sunlight creates from escaping back into space.)

The biggest greenhouse gas that we are concerned with is carbon dioxide (CO2).  Carbon dioxide has always been around and is necessary for life, but the problem is that suddenly humans are releasing a lot more of it than ever before.  Carbon dioxide is released when people and animals exhale and when you burn almost anything.  People are constantly burning things for fuel (gasoline for our cars, jet fuel for our planes, and especially coal, which is used for most of the United States' electricity generation). Carbon dioxide is also released by industry (factories of many kinds) and the killing (harvesting) of plants (for instance all the deforestation occurring in the Amazon rainforest.)

Again, there has always been carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, but since we have developed into a modern world (and places like India and China are developing, too), we're releasing more greenhouse gases than ever before.  It is believed that this is preventing heat from sunlight from escaping back into space like it used to.  Hence the temperature is rising on the earth, and is expected to increase between 2 degrees and 14 degrees in the next 100 years.  If it keeps rising, sea levels will rise, desert areas will grow, storms will increase, animals such as polar bears will become extinct, power plants along coastal areas will be submerged in sea water, people will move in mass migrations to find new places where they can live, and in general it will be a big problem.

Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

We definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.

Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane).

One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)

  6. No you are not an idiot. most Global Warming proponents don't know what it means either! They watch an Inconvenient  Truth and are immediately taken in by Al Gore's exaggerations. Look up the information by more reliable sources and see how you feel about it. The basic idea is that carbon dioxide holds the heat of certain wavelengths better than other gasses. Therefore; the increased amounts of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere are causing the worldwide temperature to increase. The debate is how much this is affecting our planet.

  7. Put simply, Global warming= an increase in global average temperatures.

  8. Global warming is the effects of harmful gasses and human products on the atmosphere. Chemicals from industry are destroying the o-zone layer and melting the polar ice caps, which screws up the main ocean currents that keep weather in check. The warmer the ice caps get, the more screwy the world goes.

  9. You aren't an idiot, Love- don't worry.  Global warming is just like it sounds.  The temperature on the earth is rising and ice caps are melting, which effects the oceans temperature, which effects the earth's temperature, again.  People say that this waxing and waning of temperature is due to an increasing hole in the Ozone layer.  In all honesty, the earth has done gone through this process several times before (hence, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Ice Age)  Ice burgs melt, the earth cools, they refreeze.  We should, none the less, be conscientious of the way that we treat our planet.

  10. First of you are not an idiot!!!

There is a lot of BAD SCIENCE being preached as if it were true, just to sell CARBON CREDITS. The biggest Liar out there is Al Gore with his PROPAGANDA movie The inconvenient truth which had very little truth in it, what an oxymoron. If that clown really believed any of his garbage he would stop living in that carbon emitting mansion and stop flying to global warming  b.s. meetings in his Private jet!!!! What a hypocrite If you want to know the truth, just follow the money!!!  The real truth is we are going through a normal cycle from solar sunspots, yes the earth is warming, but this is not the first time! Did cave man have the technology to raise the level of CO2, I do not think so. CO2 levels rise because of  the warming effect of solar flares, specifically the oceans, they give of more CO2 with a temp increase than anything else. That's why the CO2 follows the TEMP rise not the other way around. Learn to think, do not watch one movie and think this has to be true, when you get past the money grubbers you will learn the TRUTH!!!!

  11. Greenhouse gases do not destroy ozone layers.  They trap in heat and light that we emit, like plants in a greenhouse.

  12. OK... so you're an idiot... so be a smart idiot... watch "an inconvenient truth" and then you can be a super smart idiot.

  13. Global warming is being caused by greenhouse gasses--most notably CO2, but also methane gasses.  Global warming is most certainly caused by human activity, but there has been some natural variation in CO2 levels naturally over the history of the Earth.  However, we have CO2 levels that are the highest recorded in 400,000 years, which is due to humans burning fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gasoline.  When we drive, for example, the CO2 that comes out of the tailpipe mixes with other gases such that six pounds of gasoline generates 20 lbs. of CO2 greenhouse gases.  These greenhouse gases then go up into the lower atmosphere and create a blanket around the Earth that traps heat. This heat is disproportionately distributed to the poles, which is why the polar ice is melting so rapidly, even though we've only had a 2-degree rise in global temperatures.  Global warming will impact how and where rain falls on the globe, and this can have serious implications for humans and all creatures, as food production is based on temperature and rainfall.  This is extremely serious, and each one of us is responsible for finding out what we must do to change our habits to create a sustainable world.  See the link below to find out what you can do to reduce your impact.
