YouTube, Facebook, Twitter – Check. Still can’t do the dishes though.
Nintendo outlined a number applications and features that the Wii U would boast on its release including social platforming apps and the ability to use two controllers on the same console.
Following Nintendo’s not-too-impressive E3 Press Conference a number of gamers, analysts, critics and general consumers were left with a mash of information as to what the Nintendo Wii U would be a capable of.
It will play games, obviously but as Sony and Microsoft demonstrated with their PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, pure gaming consoles are a thing of the past and the consoles of this generation and the next need to provide a complete home entertainment solution. Point in case, Microsoft’s Xbox Smart Glass that facilities interactivity between all Microsoft powered devices.
Nintendo seem to have taken note of this and outlined a number of features that the Wii U would have that some gamers may not have noticed due to the fact that they were left rather ‘underwhelmed’.
The first is the news that Nintendo has signed agreements with YouTube, Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Video in order to provide video streaming and downloading capabilities. Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo America, said, "At its core, Wii U does three different things. It changes your gaming. It changes the way you interact with your gaming friends. And it changes the way you view your TV... Wii U will revolutionise your living room."
Katsuya Eguchi, the designer and manager at Nintendo EAD, pointed out another feature when he explained that gamers could transfer saves and purchases from the Wii on to the Wii U. He said, "We are readying the system, yes, to transfer saves and everything you've bought."
At the same time Nintendo also confirmed that two controllers could be used on the same console, however, that feature would not be available until a sometime after the Wii U’s release. In the meantime gamers would have to make do with using the same controller although it will come with separate accounts.
Scott Moffitt, Nintendo’s EVP of sales and marketing, said, "You will have an individual account based system. Each member of your family might have their own account."
