Try operating a ship in a heavy fog... then ask me this question again... even a "forward bridge" is not far enough forward in the fog.

to be able to see as far as possible in front of ship, it takes long time to avoid some thing in water that radar has not picked up.

Nothing to do with being classic...or fog....or room behind it...that's coincidental....it's all about being able to see over the bow of the ship.
