  1. When I studied there (Tuebingen), I experienced them as quiet forgiving. Just act as you'd normally act and you'll be fine! --I guess that's what the Germans do; even though I was told that there's a difference between the various states in terms mentality.

  2. bavarian germans are close kept, but they are friendly, i loved the people in koln and berlin when i went

  3. i am a german and i am very impresssed of your answers because they are very detailed and i absolutely agree with all of you. @Joan C. i was bron in hamburg and lived there untill i was about 12 years old, now i'm living in Schleswig-Holstein, north of hamburg ^^

  4. Nice people. Maybe a little distant at first until they get to know you. Once you get to know each other they will be your friends forever.

  5. Germans are the largest single immigrant group to EVER come to America. We are them to a large extent. If after 175 years you don't see marked differences--maybe there are few, if any pronounced differences...(except they are a lot cleaner and a little less outgoing---LOL).

  6. Generally, Germans are more stiff than the US Americans. Also, they smile less often - but when they do, they mean it more honest. The service in the shops is not as outstanding as I have seen it in LA, but they are improving. There is a German saying "the way you shout into the woods, it comes back at you", meaning, if you are polite, they will be polite to you, too. (I'm German)

  7. lovely, funny people - particularly the northerners. they are so cool!!!

  8. Respectful and polite works all over the world. Please and Thank-you are the first words you must learn when you travel to any foreign land.  (it works here in the US too)

Many Of our American Friends have acted rude before us, so the stereotypical "ugly American" is something we all must overcome at first.

Act as you are. You are no better or no worse then the German people. Be nice, honest and respectful and you will be well liked.

  9. They are a bit stand off ish. Do not be an overbearing American and you will be ok. Don't expect them to be overly friendly. My mother spoke to them in her native German and they snubbed her because she was an American. Just throw around alot of Please and Thank Yous.

  10. I lived there for almost a year and I didn't find the people rude...just not warm.  I have a better understanding of my grandmother and mother who are both from Germany.  All in all, they are very family oriented and once you make friends with them, they are your friends forever.
