  1. How much do you want to pay? That's the only limiting factor here.

I mean, you can pay tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars for a turntable, and can even get one custom made to your exact requirements if money is absolutely no object.

Rockport Sirius III is supposedly one of the best turntables in existence right now - but it costs $70K! And Continuum Audio Labs now make turntables that are even more expensive than this (over $100K).

On a more modest level, the venerable and famous Technics SL-1200 series are widely considered to be the best turntables you can buy for under $1000, provided you pair them with a decent cartridge rather than the $30 Stanton thing that they are inevitably supplied with.

The SL-1200 MkII costs around $500, and you would actually have to spend a lot more than this (probably double the amount) in order to get a better turntable. If you go to the Steve Hoffman forums (and those guys really know their vinyl), a commonly recommended listening setup is a Technics turntable coupled with an Audio Technica AT440MLa cartridge. (Steve himself apparently uses a Continuum, but that is not really an option for mere mortals!)

Another legendary turntable that has been around since the early 70s is the Linn Sondek. Reams and reams of text have been written over the years about how good this turntable is. However, it costs several thousand dollars.

At the cheaper end of the price spectrum (well under $500), there are some very nice budget priced turntables by the Czech company Pro-Ject, such as the Debut series.

  2. For a few hundred bucks ... a Project Debut

    For a $100,000.00 .......a Continuum

  3. Linn Sondek but they are not cheap.
