my boyfriend is joining the navy and may possibly be a cook. Im not picky about where he stationed. Obviously I rather have it be in Norfolk, Va but i can handle a long distance relationship.

Im just worried he will be stationed in another country. I wouldnt even know how to afford to see him. What are the chances of him being stationed in another country for his first several years?

  1. being in the navy it's not a high percent of him being stationed overseas but he will most likely be deployed on a boat. the average cuise is about 6 months. that all depends on what orders he gets. if he gets shore duty orders then he won't deploy while he's stationed there but those are usually just for 2 years.

  2. probably less than 50-50, many Navy ships are  homeported in the US, but travel the world for long periods.

  3. 100%  Sorry

  4. If he's a new enlistee (never served before), then he will be stationed to a ship, traveling the world. That's why most people join the Navy btw. Ask him if he knew that fact, he'll probably fess up that he knew all along he'd be gone a lot but didn't want to tell you. This is the first thing that recruiters tell people, he will be gone A LOT. Probably in Asia and Australia.

Which navy job, it doesn't matter. Would still be gone a lot. He should've joined the Coast Guard instead.

  5. First long distance relationships rarely work in the military not trying to be mean but you need to look at this realisticlly.

Second even if he gets Norfolk, or any other port close to home, as a Sailor and as a Cook, he will have sea duty so he will be gone a lot.

All that being said, there is a chance he will stay in the continental US, and you will live happily ever after.

  6. if a D or R get in , its 90% chance of straits of Hormuz ,8% Terra del Fuego, 2% other . sorry . vote Nader .

  7. Here's a partial list of countries where we have Naval installations. Everyone there eats. So, if he is going to be a cook, here is where he might wind up:

    Japan

    Spain

    Italy

    Korea

    Bahrain

There are Navy ships home ported in all of the above but Korea. But, he will probably be assigned to a ship and may have to deploy to the Pacific, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean or the Gulf for several months at a time.

A lot of the shore duty assignments for Navy cooks that existed during my career have been taken over by civilian contractors at stateside facilities. But, there still are some billets left in that field in the U.S.
