I've done Amtrak before and that was awesome, I feel like those rates are so hit or miss though. Sometimes they are like $50 bucks, sometimes $80, and other times well over 100(i know thats usually on the acela, i don't care if it takes a little longer, not taken the acela, not worth the dough)

  1. The Acela is well worth it. Places to plug in your laptop, decent cafe car, good seats.

  2. I would tell you to stick with Amtrak if you want to stay with the rails.

For $15 you can go from NYC to Boston by bus if you want to do the super cheap route.  http://www.fungwahbus.com/Ticket0.aspx

  3. Little secret of Amtrak, if you're in a rush go Acela and pay at least $100 per direction extra. But if you can sacrifice an hour or so, take the regional train but upgrade to business class. You actually get better service usually, and free soft drinks.

For constant rail travelers like myself Acela is a must, but for one time trips, Regional Service with the Business class upgrade is the way to go.

If you want to go all out First Class on Acela serves you a really nice meal and hands out papers. But I only do that with frequent rider rewards, it's not worth the money otherwise.

  4. Well, the whole NYC to Boston trip is available via many differant options. By far the most popular and cheapest way between the two cities is by "China Town Bus" There are several bus firms operating non-stop service between China Town NYC & Boston South Station (Same as Amtrak) with the price of only $15 Yes, I am serious, $15 each way every hour all day long! The buses are very nice & comfy, often show movies and the trip really is not all that slower than the train since the buses do not stop along the way to pick up and drop off at other places. The best choices are either Lucky Star Bus or Fung Wah Bus and can be found online at www.gotobus.com    If you must go by rail, keep in mind that the line is served by less expensive commuter systems that can get the trip done with a few connections including some transit bus links for gaps. IE Metro North Railroad & North Shore Railroad, CT Transit, MBTA. I would still strongly adivse uing the bus. Good Luck!
