  1. Split levels just mean that instead of 2-story or 1-story.... You get something in-between the two.

A two story means you have one level on the ground, and another 2nd story above it (OFFICAL 2nd story is measured)

Split levels are unique, in that maybe you walk up 8 or 10 (not necessarilly that number) steps to get to somebody's front door... and when you open the front door, you may walk back down some stairs in an entry way that opens up to the 1st ground level. That could be considered split level.

A loft is often times confused as 'split level', but would be the best comparison.

    Hope this helped.

Why not just go on realtor.com and search for split level homes so you can get a visual.

This is something most people figure out as they go along, while looking at homes and so on.

  2. a split level is like a ranch but part of it is either higher or lower than the main level.  usually by about 7 steps.

my parents had a four level.  the family room on main floor, basement was 7 steps down.  the living room and kitchen was 7 steps up from main and bedrooms were 7 steps up from living room.

    confused yet?

  3. One half is a two-story home and the other half is a one-story home. The half that is one-story is usually elevated halfway between the two stories on the other side. The levels are connected by half staircases.
