Fall semester generally runs from September to December break. Winter semester is January to April or June for university or school, respectively. The actual school year begins in Fall semester so if you are going on an exchange everyone will be starting a new year and you won't be arriving halfway through the year. That's good for meeting people who haven't already sorted out their crowd for the year.
