  1. figure skating!  and me!

  2. The picture of people skating (in any style) on the ice. :)

  3. "Disney on Ice"

I come from the Philippines where we have no snow. In the 1970s when I was a kid, there was a "Disney on Ice" show. It was my first chance to see ice on the ground. Today a couple of malls have artificial ice-skating rinks open year-round.

  4. a place where i know i can express myself however i want. challenging. tough. awesome. probably my most favorite sport EVER.

  5. dramas.... hard work....

maybe its just my rink but there seems to be so many dramas and arguments between coaches and skaters and mothers its so UGH.

its sad coz it kinda takes away the funness of the sport

  6. I think of a female figure skater - dressed for competition!

  7. being on an ice rink in the early morning and no one else is there but you can smell the zamboni guy's coffee from the other room. it's really cold but really exciting for some reason, and you can do anything you want-- it's like your feet having wings.

then I think of being about to step onto the ice at a show.

then I think of dragging my friends to the rink and teaching them all to spin.

then I think of how awesome a sport ice skating is and I wish everyone could learn to skate!

hope this answers your question and good luck with your talk!

  13. Well, usually first I think -- "Oh, I LOVE skating!  Been doing it for the larger part of my lifetime!"  But then I always think, "Hmm, 'ice' skating is what people call it when it's just a general reference meaning all ice sports or just recreational skating.  People say 'figure' skating when they're being more specific, referring to freestyle, dance, synchro or pairs."  It's been my experience that people who are skaters....hockey, speed, figure...refer to it more specifically and don't call it ice skating.  It sounds petty, but it seems that people call it 'ice skating' when they aren't really involved or familiar on the difference between sports.  Just like I could care less what the positions are in soccer, they're all just "soccer players" to me.  When I refer to myself as a skater, I say 'figure skater" and not an "ice skater."  I know it's dumb....but when a mom says to her kids, "Oooo.  Look at the ice skater,"  I cringe.  :)

In general though, I love skating.  It's a challenge and a huge feeling of accomplishment when you hit each little success.  The sport, and yes I say sport because it is one of the most difficult, competitive "activities" I've ever tried, is a great combination of athleticism, entertainment, artestry, music and pagentry.
