I just turned 18 and I need a driving license. I live in Alabama and I'm home-schooled. It says here (http://dps.alabama.gov/DriverLicense/pdf/ApplyingDL.pdf) that I need an acceptable school enrollment form or proof of graduation (if younger than 19 and applying for the first time) What the h**l do they expect home-schoolers to do? I'm not waiting until I'm freaking 19 to get my Bob dayumed driving license. I mean, what the h**l? Should I make my mother write a 50 word essay on how she has been my teacher since the beginning of 9th grade and sign it at the bottom? I'm very seriously doubting that it would be ""acceptable". Care to offer some advice? I'm literally a nervous wreck over this because I've been studying my asss off for 3 weeks getting prepared to take the written test and now I'm worried sick that I might have to wait another year over this.

  1. I WENT THROUGH THE SAME THING  in Michigan.

Ok this is what i did take every piece of information you have to them. Every legal document that has your name on it and demand your license. You have to talk to some1 that's in charge they can make exceptions for the rules. I went through the same exact thing please email me if you have any questions.

  2. Bob dayumed, lol....Do you have your permit???.....'Cause I'm pretty sure you can get that even if you're homeschooled...I know kids that have, in that situation...If your a independent homeschooler, then you can get a local school district to fill out some certificate of attendance, saying that time was put in at home and they'll take that and then you can take the test....Though I've never been to Alabama so I don't know all their state rules...but I mean...It's Alabama right....I don't think they will give you to hard a time.

  3. that's what i'd try

  4. Why don't you call them up and explain the situation?

If you are being home schooled, there must be some sort of state authority that has sanctioned, approved, autrhorized, recorded, allowed, or what-ever-ed it.

So then THEY could vouch that you are indeed educated, and have or will soon have the equivalent of a high school degree.

Failing that, threaten to sue their asses off.

  5. In Oregon all we had to do was write a short "letter of intent" and send it to the Education Service District office.  They in turn send back a form for the Department of Motor Vehicles that states the fact that the student is enrolled in home-school.

Contact the people at www.hslda.org and find out from them what is the best thing to do.  They will know.

  6. If I understand homeschooling correctly, there is an actual high school near you that sponsors your homeschooling (i.e. sends you assignments, you submit your work to them, etc.). I have a friend who was homeschooled and this is the way it worked for her. When she applied for her license, her sponsor school provided her with the paperwork to prove that she was enrolled in an acceptable form of eduction. Perhaps a school in your county could do the same for you? I'm sure you are not the first homeschooled person in Alabama to have this question, maybe you can just call the DMV and ask?

    Good luck!

  7. I got my license at 16...before I graduated....

sooooooooooooooooooo Texas doesn't require anything of the sort...

  8. I think you need to go to another town to get your license because I know you don't need proof of graduation everywhere.

  9. I would suggest that you call your local DMV and explain your situation calmly. They more than likely have a policy for homeschoolers applying for a license.

  10. Have you tried contacting them? Someone should be able to tell you what to do. If you've registered with your local education agency as an independent homeschooler, than they should be able to complete the form as well.

Do you get your homeschooling curriculum from somewhere? Or are you enrolled in an online school? If so, then perhaps they can complete the form for you.

Hope one of these options works out for you!
