What the heck is a dummy!?

Of course I feel like the dummy for asking this, but I see Q's about them here all the time and I have no idea what the heck it is! Please, no rude comments about me being stupid, It's just I don't know what it is, have an 8 month old, obviously never used or had the need to or Id know what the h e l l it is!!

    I HATE when people call it a "Dummy", thats not the proper name. If it were they would put "Dummy" on the package instead of Pacifer! LOL...

  9. it would be interesting to gather all the different names for them.  My mother calls it a dummy but my husband calls it a pippy which I've now picked up too.  Why don't we all just call them by their real names.  Pacifiers, or soothers....  I guess all the other names do sound cuter:)
