I've seen so many questions about it. I think I'm kind of slow. But what is it?

Avatar Games are a violation notice waiting to happen.  They are considered useless chat and are NOT considered knowledge seeking questions.  The best way to win one is not to even play one.

It is a violation notice just waiting to happen. It is a "game" played on Polls and Surveys category that violates up to 8 different articles of TOS or the Community Guidelines.
