Ok, I went down to the County Carter store (It is very very very old) and right near it was a junkyard filled with old and crashed cars. Anyways, while walking to CC store, I looked at the sign on the fence where the junkyard cars were and it said "Beware of dog". The fence was WIDE open and there was this tiger striped pit bull with alittle white on his chest and he was sleeping.

I tried not to disturb him but he heard me and woke up. When he woke up, he looked at me and came running out the fence with his tail wagging looking to play. I petted him and he ran back in the fence which was quite odd.

Anyways, he had the "cropped ears and chained collar" c**p going on to make him look tough. But jesus, to me he is quite a terrible guard dog.

Why do people get Pits and turn them into guard dogs ? And it's funny because they are too human friendly to be guard dogs.

  1. our fur babies (2 pit bulls and a spaniel/sheepdog), bark alot but dammit they'll l**k ya to death first. and bite later!

  2. simple answer...

becuase there idiots and pitts LOOK tough

those are the people who are the reason for pitties having such a horrible reputation.

  3. People gets pits as guard dogs because that's what they were bred to do.. in addition to bull baiting and pit fighting.  I dont condone it, but it is a fact that the breed, along with most other Bully and Molosser type dogs were bred originally for this purpose.

Dr. Carl Semencic's book "Pit bulls and tenacious guard dogs" is a GREAT read about how the pitbull has come to be the ideal guard dog for most and how great it is at it's job.   I suggest pickin up a copy, its a great and VERY intelligent book depicting pitbulls for what they are- loving, loyal animals who if needed, will defend or fight until death to serve and protect their masters!

  4. People who know nothing about dogs often get dogs who are considered tough. Dogs like pit bulls and dobermans and rottweilers and even german shepherds. Then they leave them outside to protect their junk, cars, businesses etc.. I've never understood it myself, it does not make sense as most of these dogs are not really vicious, some used to herd, others hunt and catch small critters. I do not know how they expect a dog who gets fed and taken care of by people to go after other specific persons. It takes some harsh training that has to practised for years and then emphasized for years after. It's as if they think dogs are robotic tools. They would be better off with an alarm system that a living breathing animal.

  5. For the exact reason  you hesitated before approaching the gate, it's just they present a fierce looking dog and most people are hesitant to approach them.

  6. yes pitbulls can look tough but there a sucker for attention they make bad guard dog, you get the odd one that's good but there normally harmless. But alot of people would be scared to enter just on the reputation.

  7. yea makes me wonder sometimes too. i was raised in compton and everyone had pits or dobes, and they were the best dogs we could ever play with. i remember there was one named shotgun and we would dress him up! and even have tea parties lol those were the good ol days...

  8. because everyones impression of a pitbull is mostly bad, they look at them as vicious dogs. i have a pitbull and shes a sweetheart. its so sad how some people treat dogs :(
