What the h**l do i put in a covering letter?

Question

going for a new job, it says to bring your cv with a covering letter

what do i put, never had to do one before.

Also, i no the Covering letter has to have your address on, but its already on my cv, so do i keep it on the letter, or my cv, or both, or...what?

I presume yr CV covers everything about yr experience, education etc, so no need to repeat any of that in the covering letter.

Just give the Subject: Application for the post of...

Reference... this is with reference to your advertisement, telephone call whatever...

Then dear Madam/Sir; Please find enclosed my CV ...

You could once more provide details about how to contact you (phone number etc. )

Covering letters should be no more than 2 paras. Crisp, clear, to the point. And good luck!

Use the normal formal letter format, ie your address on top right of page.

Your cover letter could include:-

Position applied for (you could do this as a title heading)

Reason for applying

Why you would be suited to the job

What relevant experience you have

What you would bring to the job

EXAMPLE

RE: Receptionist Vacancy

To Whom it May Concern,

I am writing to you in reference to the above position as advertised in (The blah Express etc).

I would like to apply for the position because (give reasons)

I feel I would be well suited to the role of Receptionist because (give reasons)

And I have relevant experience from (list anything you've done which may have given you relevant experience)

Please find enclosed a copy of my Curriculum Vitae for your perusal.

A covering letter is really about selling yourself.  Explain why you want the job, how you would be perfect for it, how your an excellent time keeper and attender, trustworthy and honest and how you would be a great asset to their company.  all the best I hope your are successful
