  7. Aussie Football is known to Australians as AFL or Australian rules football and it is the most popular football code in Australia. It is sort of a combination between soccer, rugby and gaelic football where the objective is to kick an oval shaped ball through a goal. Six points are awarded for a goal and one point for a behind (narrowely missing the goal).

AFL is a very physical game played at a fast pace. Players are very athletic and strongly built and wear no padding such as in NFL. Heavy tackles, bumps and hard hits are a characteristic of this game. The game originated in the state of Victoria and has spread in popularity throughout Australia- crowds reach upto 95,000 -100,000 for big games. It is more commonly played in southern states of Australia.

I played AFL for many years and it is a fantastic sport. Injuries are very common as there is no padding and the tackles and hits come from all directions unlike rugby and NFL where the hits come from head on. Injuries have forced me to stop playing- I have broken my wrist, foot, arm, torn knee ligaments and knocked unconscious three times playing.

  9. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the Australian national competition in the sport of Australian rules football. The organisation that runs the league has become the de facto world governing body for the sport. The AFL is the most popular professional sporting league in the country. In 2005 the AFL Premiership Season had a total regular season attendance of 6,283,788, and the average attendance of 35,703 was the third highest of any professional sports league in the world.

The AFL evolved from the Victorian domestic competition, and over the past 25 years it has grown into a national competition with teams based in five of the six Australian states although ten of the sixteen clubs are still based in Victoria. Since the move toward a national competition, the AFL has become a very powerful, wealthy and influential organisation in Australian sport.

The 16 teams play against each other in 22 rounds between late March and early September. These matches are followed by a series of finals matches which culminate in the two best teams playing off for the premiership in the AFL Grand Final, the best attended domestic club championship event in the world.

  10. Well it's not soccer or rugby or baseball or grid iron , it's Aussie Rules.. The game favoured by most States except NSW who love their rugby... It's nick name to some is Aeriel Ping-pong , Go the Bombers...

  11. Australian football is the fastest, highest scoring, most spectacular and toughest football code in the world. Players have to be superbly fit, some of them will run more than 10km in a game as well as kicking and passing the ball, tackling and being tackled. It is played on a cricket oval that would accommodate three or four soccer/rugby fields.

Once you see a great game - like either of the last two Grand Finals -  any other football code will be second best.

  12. They might mean rugby.
