What the h**l is a chav?

Im American and I have been hearing this term, someone please explain to me what the h**l a chav is! haha

It's often used to stereotype the poor underclass of British society, young children are labelled and stereotyped within society from a young age and deemed to be misfits although many of them are not, and some are socialised in this sense. It stands for Council Houses and Violence - assuming that they live in government funded housing and have anti-social tendencies. There is a well known, prejudice and discriminatory website known as www.chavscum.co.uk or .com, i haven't been on it in a long while but it grew in popularity within the last few years!

Also, i've noticed the mention of working class but infact many of them do not have jobs or work although they may have came from previous industrial era of the labourer (working class). Thus, rendering them the lowest of the socio-economic groups.

Seb has a good description although CHAV also stands for Council Housed Adolescent Vermin...but I think you get the picture!

(Council housing is social housing..though it has to be said that not everyone in Council housing is a chav)

"Chav" is the equivalent to the American term - White/Trailer Trash.

It is stereotypically associated with the lower social/economic class in the UK. Yob Culture etc.
