Have you check Yamaha's website?  Usually the addition of the second 'alpha' indicates either duel purpose, such as a sport touring (just adds the pee-pad & little taller saddle/aka ground clearence) or a full-out race machine.

The R6 is the race bike and the R6S is the street bike. It's a little cheaper as well with a different tail fender.
