  1. I know! My husband and i talk about it all the time. Actuall I talk, he rants.

In late 1998, early 1999, we were stationed in Tacoma, WA and we lived in a town called Fife. We lived right near a truck stop and we paid $.89 a gallon! I KNOW! WTF? Its ridiculous! It is costing me (in Delaware) between $65 and $70 dollars to fill my tank. We have 3 kids. they always need to be somewhere. its killing me! Thats why people can't pay their mortgages and credit card bills. They need the money to buy gas to get to work to make money to buy more gas!

    It's disgusting!

  2. Given that your still paying significantly less for petrol than Australians, there's not much to worry about.  For a irreplaceable product that has to be discovered, extracted, refined and delivered half a world away, it's still a very cheap buy

  3. You do know that oil companies are publicly traded corportations, right. I guess I am an evil oil tycoon because I hold exxon stock. The oil companies don't make their money on the price of oil, that goes to the producers (OPEC etc) most oil companies make their money because they own/operate the tankers that transport the fuel. It would actually be better for them if gas was cheaper, because then we would continue to be stupid and buy inefficient vehicles, drive 3 blocks to the store rather than walk and not bother to carpool.  The more gas volume sold, the better it is for them.  Also, if you think $4 in bad, check out Europe and Asia.  the US has most of the refineries so oil is shipped to us, turned into gas and other products and then shipped back across the ocean. Japan pays $10 a gallon (which is probably why they have electromagnetic monorails and honda is the most fuel efficient car maker)

How stupid are we in the USA. The 1984-85 Civic had a model at got 55 mpg highway, but since gas was on the way down, we stopped carrying again.  In 1998, after years of low gas, for the first time ever, the average car going to the junk yard had better mileage than the average car rolling off the assembly line. Hopefully, the high prices will stay  long enough for america to finally wake up get it right Maybe it will make people like jenk1972 stop driving such ridiculous vehicles.  I was one of three kids and we took trips in an 86 Honda Accord, 14 gallon tank.  45 bucks to fill up today, but it would go over 500 miles on that tank. It probably seemed like a good idea to get a gas hog at 89 cents a gallon, not so much at $3.

  4. Yeah I'm gonna start riding my bike again...F*ck driving if its gonna be 4 dollars a gallon i rather wake 60 miles to the beach then pay 50 bucks to fill up my 12 gallon tank with gas and drive there(this summer) i suggest everyone starts riding bikes more and show those oil company's there not needed and to not pay them so they can rob us of our money

  5. The first gallon I pumped was in 1975, and it was 57 cents. Houses were 50 grand. Now the same house is 500 grand and gas is 3.35. Homes have increased in value something like 700-900 percent, while gas has increased less than 500 percent in the same time. So why are you not complaining about the cost of housing? It' simple. You WANT your house to appreciate so you can make money on it when you sell it, but you want it to stay LOW if you're the one trying to BUY it. You DON'T want fuel to increase because you DON'T want the seller to make money when he sells it, but if YOU were the one sucking oil out of the ground and refining it into fuel and selling it, YOU would want the price to go UP. Sounds like a double standard of epic proportions if you ask me. Maybe your buddies Obama and Hillary can bring the price down by subsidizing it with MY tax dollars. Math is certainly not one of the Democrat's strong points.

  6. Two reasons:

    1) Oil is at $102/bbl (or somewhere around there) making it almost as high as in the 1970's and 1980's.

    2) Very weak American Dollar. The value of the dollar has gone down, when the value of nearly everything has stayed the same. Thus, putting a 'false' price increase on everything.

I hate to side with the oil companies, because I hate that they're getting my money, but they're just like any other company, they're in it for profit. If Apple sold everything at cost, they'd make no profit, they're stock would be worth nothing, and they wouldn't be able to pay for employees, advertisments, or anything else.

Though the $3.19 we're paying now is better than the $4.09 we were paying back over the summer.

  7. America needs to drive less and drive smaller cars.  We, the people, have the power to fix this.  We should stop pointing fingers at our government, the oil companies, OPEC, al Qaida, or whoever, and take action ourselves.

  8. Obscene gas prices are but one of the many burdens placed on us by the wars in the middle east. Gas was something like $20 per barrel before Afghanistan. After we went into Iraq? Fahgeddabowditt. It's over $100 per barrel, now. They're talking about $140 in the Summer. That's $4 a gallon.
