  1. you mean tread. in Pa. it is 2/32 of an inch or 1/16 of an inch

  2. The UK minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm across the central 75% of the tread width circumferentially.  But don't forget to check the edges too, as incorrect alignment and pressure can wear the edges of the tyres down the the carcass before the centre is even half worn.

Most tyres have little nodules in the tread called tread-wear indicators or breaker bars - run your fingers around the tread and you should find them. On Michelin tyres their position is marked on the side of the tyre by a picture of the Michelin man so they're easy to find. They mark the 1.6mm limit, and are a good, easy indication of when you're getting close to the mark.

I would recommend getting your tyres changed before reaching 1.6mm as running them this low affects the braking distance and road-holding capabilities.

  3. 2/32...................

  4. How to check using a penny: insert the penny into the tread groove with Lincoln’s face showing, but with his head upside-down. If you are able to see all of Lincoln’s head, the tire needs replacement. If you see a wear bar across the width of the tread while facing it, it’s time to replace the tire.

  5. In most places, 2/32", in some places it is 3/32"  For an all-season tire, anything less than 4/32" will not serve you well in even light snow, or in heavy rain.

By the way, most tires are legally dead after 6 years no matter how much tread may be left.
