What the procedure if you had the f-1 visa one year ago?

If you finished your MSc studies 1 year ago and returned to your home country. Now you will start a PhD and your previous stamped f-1 visa has an expiration day of december 2010. Do you need to request again the F-1 visa? or you still can use that F-1 visa even when you have been out of the US for one year?
