That is a loaded question, in that it depends.

i went to japan during high school for a summer study and i went without speaking a word of japanese. for a highschool program japanese may not be neccessary. for university it is not neccessary but it requires you to take time to learn japanese. if you just want to learn the language you o not have to speak it. but if you want to get a biology degree in japan you need to be fluent.

as far as other requirements basically do not be stupid. youd be suprised...

well as i read you question above now,,about STUDY JAPAN,,i can advice you friend,,study 1st the JAPANESE LANGUAGE before you go abroad in japan country,,im a foriegner also living in 15 years in japan,,but when i come japan country i study first the japanese dialect even if you are a rich person to go abroad in japan country its useless without knowing the japanese dialect..because you cannot convince or talk a japanese person because 5 or 60 percent only japanese person can speak English grammar,,its very difficult to study the language and written/writting hiragana,katakana,kanjii in 1st timer go abraod of japan country,,if you are very interested,,from now on hurry to speak japanese dialect etc..good luck..
