  1. they design the ships and make sure they are put together properly so they don't explode on takeoff or re entry

    they also design the sips that will transport people in the future.


  2. At JSC they're the people who man the control room during the flights. Before the mission, they're the ones who plan the flight and calculate the orbit and train the astronauts. They also design the hardware.

  3. Almost everything. They do so much like figuring out how much thrust is needed, and all the stuff that is needed to get whatever they are launching off the ground and get it in space, orbiting, and back on ground safely.

  4. They are essentially the main components of any space agency: the ones who actually get the machines/people into space, or in the air for that matter.  They are the ones who decide on the rocket design, engine, thrust, calculate how much the machine can carry in the payload,  aerodynamics, etc.  They essentially can be summed up with "rocket scientist."
