What the sh** happened on 8/10/08?

I keep seeing buttons, stickers, banners, flair all over the internet saying stuff like "8/10/08 Remember" and "USA 4X100 8/10/08 I saw it". I keep googling it, but nothin'. Can anyone explain this to me?

  4. Swimming race in the Olympics happened. 4x100 relay, meaning 4 swimmers each swim 100m. Michael Phelps (US Swimmer) was going for 8 gold medals, and going into the final 100m the US was down. But the final swimmer (Jason Lezak) made up a ton of ground and barely won the race. If they had lost Phelps wouldn't have been able to win a record 8 medals.
