  1. Blue rams are certainly the most common.  Apistos get a bit bigger, and it's not common to see them in a pet store.

If you are looking for a good source for rams and apistos, I recommend: http://www.twofishguyz.com.  They do seem a bit expensive at first, but the fish I got from them have all been healthy.

Also, be careful when buying rams from  a store.  I have had a 0% success rate, even from 2 different stores (only 2 that are around me that carry them).  The only rams that have remained alive are the ones I got from two fish guyz (It's been 2 weeks, and they're doing well, so fingers crossed).

  2. German Blue Rams and Bolivian Rams usually get about 3" long and are probably the most commonly seen. Some Apistogramma species stay around 2.5" but it will depend on the quality of your local aquatics stores on which, if any, of those are available.
