  1. Well this is currently the only place in the EU where an unlicensed driver can drive unsupervised and this law has been a long time coming. It's ridiculous that in 2008 people are still driving about without a license. I assume that if you are driving your child to school your driving must be reasonably safe so in that case you have nothing to worry about in passing your driving test.

If you continue to drive without a license or being supervised and get caught you will get fined and a driving ban.

And Tribbles, how can you say 'a mere 6' ???? That is six human lives lost. There is nothing 'mere' about it.

  2. yes, should not drive without 2 years experience full lincence driver. this is foolish thing. it is not possible.

  3. €1000 fine and a few penalty points on your license if you are caught. What a horrible money making scheme, in my opinion.

They scared the living daylights out of provisional license holders last November saying that they were going to bring that in that law in the space of a few days. But they put it off until the end of June.

Reason why they are doing this? Because they want to cut down the number of fatalities on the roads. (In 2007, learner drivers were responsible for 1.5% of fatalities on Irish roads- a **** 6)

Its a scam. Learner drivers are the most safest, responsible drivers on the road in my opinion. What they should do is focus on the drink-drivers and the kids zooming on the roads in Honda Civics like a racecourse instead.

I know some of my friends are going to take down their L Plates in hope that they won't stand out. If the Gardai start doing check points, asking for licences, it may be a more severe penalty then if they are caught.

I passed mine in April. I wish you all the best. Its not going to be easy.

EDIT- Sorry guys. I apologise and have removed the offending word. I understand why I am getting thumbs down…and I really deserve them too. My point was, why are the government only focusing on 1.5% of the problem and not the remaining 98.5%? Surely if you were going to combat a problem, you’d start where the biggest problem is and not the smallest?

  4. Yes it's true. However you should have had a test by now. They told all provisional holders to apply in November and they would all be tested before the deadline. I failed as mine came right in the middle of my college exams so I was a bit flustered to say the least but I applied that day and have my test in three weeks. Apply now and you should have it by early August. In fairness they did give plenty of warning even though it has been implemented terribly. I wouldn't advise driving at all even with the plates off because they will be checking random cars.
