  1. A quartz crystal vibrates, generating a radio-frequency signal that is counted by the rest of the circuitry and displayed on a liquid crystal display as time.

    The numbers are black because that's the cheapest way to display the output of an LCD. The display doesn't really have anything to do with the technology that generates the time.
