Recently i have seen several news feeds/videos of people stealing transport trucks loaded with lumber, livestock, and produce

I thought that the transport trucks had better theft detection than most vehicles?

  1. What we have been doing for all of our commercial customers is installing GPS tracking devices for this reason as well as for employees wasting time and it is working so I would say that everyone is doing the same to some degree.

  2. It's near impossible to secure a load in/on a trailer.  Locks can be installed but a pair of bolt cutters removes those in a flash.  Lumber is tied down with nylon straps so even if you could secure the fastener in some way a knife will cut right through them.

Trucks themselves are just as easy to break into as cars, just harder to drive.  GPS, micro chips in the loads themselves and I know some guys have rigged up devices that electrify door handles.  Just like a car though, if someone wants it, someone is going to take it but unlike a car a safe and secure parkiing area is harder to find.
