  1. Wegener was the one who introduced the theory of continental drift.  In that theory, he proposed that all of earth's land masses were once joined together in a super continent that he called Pangaea.  Then that continent began to break up.  The resulting lithospheric plates began to move over the surface of the earth.

His theory was not received well by his peers.  The main reason for the skepticism was that Wegener could not give and adequate or plausible force that moved the plates.  It was not until after his death that technology advanced to the point that the ocean bottom could be explored.  At that time sea floor spreading was discovered.  This was the evidence that Wegener needed.  His theory of continental drift has been expanded and amended and is now known as plate tectonics.

  2. In 1912 a scientist named Alfred Wegener fiirst published the theory of  Pangaea  not only did he publish it but he introduced the theory of continental placement.
