What things can companies do to know their global competition? In addition to knowing the competition, what do companies need to know in order to do business in other countries?

Check with the people in local & national governments that deal with trade & commerce issues.  

Hire a consultant in the country of interest, to advise you on a feasibility study.

Get industry reports on how the competition is doing if they're a publicly traded company.  

Find out from ad agencies what the promotional costs are going to run to do an effective campaign to introduce your product.

Look into forming a partnership with another company that is not doing what you're doing.  Or buy out an existing business that has good product distribution & brand awareness.
