I have a 10-yr old son with mild autism and adhd, and a 6-yr old typical daughter. What are some things I can get them involved in, possibly the same thing, since I don't have a lot of time. What would be something that wouldn't require a ton of time, but would still be good for them socially?

  1. art classes.

    pottery.

    a wilderness club.

    girl/boy scouts.

    a 'heritage' group.

    ymca.

    community center.

    music classes.

    dance class.

    Awana's.

    etc..

You know your kids, so you know what they both enjoy.. Look around the community, I am sure you can find something.

  2. I know you said "not sports" but I've got to recommend martial arts. Suitable for all ages, boys and girls, kids can progress at their own speed, and respect for others is a big thing.

  3. Dancing or drama.  You can usually do 1/2hour lessons with a group and the kids will love acting and the music side.  Some performing arts schools offer both.

  4. i know in our area, our public library has a childrens day. They do art projects, reading, on occasion they have wild animals come and they learn all sorts of neat things. Check with your public library they may offer something like that.  Also if your town has a rollerskating rink, we go every sunday and the kids love it, even my 3 year old.

  5. Drama school for children.

  6. i loved martial arts, as it really allows you to make good friends and get a true workout while raising self esteem and learning respect and discipline. i would also suggest some form of scouts or a club of some sort based on their interests. Instruments can also provide social activity as later in life they will naturally be drawn to other musical based groups  (ie a kid that plays guitar will seek out other guitar players)

I have also found that many sports can be quite good for autistic kids as well as normal children, such as soccer and softball.

  7. Kinda gym and kids gym

    taekwon do

    ten pin bowling

    go kart racing

arts and crafts- some areas have clubs

    dancing

    music lessons

    drama and acting

check out clubs and venues in your area and see whats available.

    all the best

  8. Instruments/ Music. I have played the piano for 4 years and I absolutely love it. It's the best thing I have ever done. After learning an insturment, they could even join the school band, at a junior high/high school level- some elementary schools offer this opportunity at 4th or 5th grade. For now though, they could focus on learning the instrument. It's a gift to have. I especially love the compliments I recieve after playing amazing pieces. Defintely get them involved in music. Music can cheer them up when they're sad and will be with them for the rest of their lives. It will positively impact them, probably forever.

  9. Scouts. They cater for all kids

  10. Children's choir at your church (or a nearby church that has one).  My son is in ours, and they all have a great time.  They learn a lot about music, sing 1 song/month at church, and the director mixes in games with the practices so they all love it.

Otherwise, art, music, 4-H, community offerings like nature center programs, etc.
